In September, Republican legislators in Texas passed SB8, which bars abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat at around six weeks — often before a woman knows she is pregnant, and in direct contradiction of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. This law allows for private citizens — from anywhere in the country — to bring civil suits against anyone who assists a pregnant person seeking an abortion.

In response, the Santa Monica Democratic Club will be hosting a panel on the subject of the State of Reproductive Justice to look at how this new Texas law works, whether it will spread to other states, what other cases/laws we should be keeping an eye on, how we will fight back and ultimately win this fight, and what we can do in California to further Reproductive Justice.

Reproductive Justice is the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities. Core components of reproductive justice include equal access to safe abortion, affordable contraceptives, and comprehensive sex education, as well as freedom from sexual violence.

Moderating our panel will be Friend of the Club and Public Interest Attorney Sandra Fluke, who has long been outspoken on these subjects.

Joining the panel are:
Jamie Kennerick – Planned Parenthood LA
Nourbese Flint – Black Women for Wellness
Lorena Garcia Zermeno – CA Latinas for Reproductive Justice
Sylvia Ghazarian -Executive Director, Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (WRRAP)

At this meeting we will also hear from Santa Monica’s new City Manager, David White, and we will also vote to pass our new bylaws amendments.
