August 25: The Future of Education with Supt. Tony Thurmond

It’s back to school time, but this year a whole new set of issues faces parents, students, teachers, and administrators. How to ensure a high quality of education across our student population with a diverse set of needs with the uncertainty of the delta variant looming over the planned return to in-person instruction.
Our local leaders will discuss lessons learned after a full year of remote learning and consider what our education system will look like in the years to come.

Our moderator for this discussion will be SMMUSD Boardmember Keith Coleman, who will be joined by his fellow boardmembers, Laurie Lieberman and Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein, as well as SaMoHi Senior Antonella Borjas (Vice Chair of Social Media on our Diversity & Inclusion Committee), Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati, and Dr. Devon Smith, SMMUSD Coordinator of Learning & Innovation.

Joining this diverse panel of local experts will be our State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. Supt. Thurmond has been an outspoken national voice during the pandemic for keeping our students and teachers safe, encouraging eligible students to get vaccinated, and funding quality education for all students.

Also joining the event will be Dr. Sion Roy with the latest covid updates and newly appointed SM City Councilmember Lana Negrete, making her SMDC debut.
