8/2: Rally To Save Rent Control
Members of our City Council are attempting to change our 43-year-old rent control law to benefit landlords! This puts renters at risk.
We are organizing a rally on Tuesday, August 2nd at 6:30 PM outside Santa Monica City Hall, one night before the Council meets again to discuss the proposed Charter Amendment ballot measure that would permanently alter the way rent control works in Santa Monica.
The proposal to means test rent control was brought forth – in possible violation of the Brown Act – at 3:00am at their last meeting, without public notice or a staff report, and most importantly without the input and expertise of the duly elected Rent Control Board or its staff. Landlords worked with some councilmembers to write the proposed amendment and stayed at the meeting until after 4:00am to ensure their bidding was done.
Means testing is the same approach that national Republicans have proposed in recent years to chip away at Social Security and Medicare.
Watch the Council devolve into dysfunction as soon as the councilmember proposes her conservative approach:

Please share widely with your supporters and encourage participation. Santa Monica has always been a leader in rent control; if the bulwark fails here, it will start falling across the rest of the region.
If you cannot attend the rally (or even if you can), please write into City Council by Wednesday at noon at the following email addresses, and tell them to follow the Rent Control Board’s plan and institute a 3% rent increase cap that maintains the stability of our rent control law.
