2020 Endorsement Process

Every two years, our Club makes endorsements in all City races. These endorsements are shared directly with all registered Democrats in Santa Monica; our Club has a strong record of choosing winning candidates due to our thorough consideration and robust GOTV operation. This year, we pledge to hold the most transparent endorsement process yet.

On August 7, we will send all registered Democratic candidates a written questionnaire. They will have until August 16 to fill out the questionnaire, which will be a requirement for our endorsement. The Executive Board of the Club will interview all candidates on August 23. The questionnaire responses as well as recordings of those interviews will be made available to the membership.

On September 9 and 16, we will host virtual public candidate debates for each City position: City Council (full term), City Council (special election), Rent Control Board, School Board, and College Board. After these debates conclude, the membership may vote to endorse candidates in each race. Any candidate who receives 55% or higher of the membership’s vote will earn our endorsement. Further details can be found in our Club Bylaws.

Do not hesitate to reach out to the Club with any questions about this process.

Important NoteIf you are not a 2020 or 2019 member, you must sign up no later than August 10, 2020, in order to be in good standing to vote at our September 9 endorsement meeting:
